Job Description:
Scientific Engineering Associate, or Senior (Experimental Nanostructures) - 75682 Organization: MS-Materials Sciences The Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory invites applications for a micro- or nano- fabrication process engineering associate to work with the staff of the Center for X-Ray Optics (CXRO). This position provides multifunctional technical/engineering support in studies of x-ray optical, electronic, magnetic and chemical experimental nanostructures. Primary responsibilities include fabrication of nanostructures, maintenance and daily operation of a nanofabrication laboratory, and development and characterization of new process techniques. Responsibilities: • Provide multifunctional technical support in studies of x-ray optical, electronic, magnetic and chemical experimental nanostructures. • Execute complete projects using novel and standard processes, employing a state-of-the-art electron beam lithography tool to prepare nanostructures for these studies. • Develop and characterize new process techniques for thin film deposition and etching and implement alternative solutions to meet project goals. • Identify electrical, electronic, and mechanical problems with the installed toolset and develop solutions including scheduling, coordinating and directing technical support. • Prepare designs of nanostructures using specialized CAD (computer aided design) and data transcription software. • Measure nanostructure properties with analytical laboratory techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, surface profilometry, and thin film reflective spectroscopy. • Maintain detailed laboratory/experimental logs, notebooks and computer databases. • Participate in the analysis of experimental results. • Work with students and scientists to assist in the formulation and development of projects and the completion of tasks. • Provide support for daily operations of a nanofabrication laboratory. • May use machine tools for basic operations. • May supervise the activities of nonexempt staff. Additional responsibilities for senior level: • May supervise the activities of exempt and nonexempt staff • Resolve a diverse range of technical problems with evaluation of data analysis

Requirements:
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Physics or Engineering plus typically up to 4 years of laboratory experience with lithography systems and thin film fabrication technology, or overall equivalent experience • Direct experience with e-beam systems and/or photolithography • Experience with high vacuum systems, electronic circuits and systems, and mechanical systems • Analytical and learning skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team • Effective verbal and written communication skills • Ability to keep detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks and produce documentation and reports • Experience with a wide variety of computer operating systems as well as CAD programs used in the semiconductor industry is desirable. Additional qualifications for senior level: • Typically up to 8 years of laboratory experience with lithography systems, thin film fabrication technology, and e-beam systems Notes: A single 2-year term appointment will be hired at either the associate or senior associate level. The job classification level of the successful candidate will be based on relevant depth and breath of engineering/scientific support experience. A background check is required.
