Job Details

Chemist Postdoc Fellow - Biomolecular Assembly, 24532
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Berkeley, CA USA
Position Type: Post Doc

Job Description:
Job Title: Chemist Postdoc Fellow - Biomolecular Assembly
Req Number: 24532
Division: Materials Sciences
Department: Molecular Foundry

The Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Berkeley Lab scientists and collaborators from other institutions to study assembly of proteins and lipids on nanotubes and nanowires. Will also develop new types of hybrid bionanoelectronic platforms based on membrane proteins embedded in lipid bilayers on silicon nanowire surfaces. The research focus is to study the structural characteristics and self-assembly dynamics in these systems and use them to design, fabricate and test new types of devices that combine sophisticated biological and electronic device functionality.
The Biomolecular Materials Program within the Materials Science Division focuses on the understanding and manipulating the physics and chemistry of assembly at the interface between biomolecular systems and inorganic materials. The projects address mission goals for the Office of Basic Energy Sciences. The in situ characterization group utilizes AFM, X-ray and electron microscopy tools to investigate assembly pathways and understand the physical controls on kinetics and morphology.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Synthesize nanowires, assemble lipids and proteins on the nanowire templates, perform fluorescence microscopy imaging of the assembled structures, and characterize lipid mobility.
  • Integrate these structures into device platforms and perform their electrochemical characterization.
  • May prepare research publications (oral and written) on experimental results.
  • May communicate results in group meetings and participate in professional activities, as appropriate.
  • May direct graduate students and undergraduate assistants in the laboratory.

Note: This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to four years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs.
